Texas is a modern state that is changing rapidly. But with growth came discussion. Booming Texas has been at the forefront of all the major debates in the US in recent years: about immigration, climate change and whether America is still a democracy. With the presidential elections in their sights, Nieuwsuur journalist Eelco Bosch van Rosenthal and director Hans Pool travel through Texas, where you can already see what America will look like in the future.

Heel onverwacht is het niet dat mijn eigen beeld van Texas (vooral voortkomend uit Hollywoodfilms en countryliedjes) niet conform de realiteit is. Eelco Bosch van Rosenthal neemt ons mee naar een cultureel diverse plek waar progressieve bewegingen evenzeer voet aan de grond krijgen als elders in de Verenigde Staten. Alhoewel de laatste twee afleveringen dan ook weer de intens cynische kanten laat zien van de olie-industrie en de Republikeinse pogingen om zwarte kiezers buitenspel te zetten. Meer journalistiek van opzet dan NPO-reisprogramma's soms zijn; het gaat echt om de onderwerpen en de reis van Rosenthal is bijzaak. 'De Slag om Texas' vormde rond verschijnen een prima context bij actuele nieuwsbulletins over bijvoorbeeld de rap dalende olieprijzen of Texas' moeilijkheden met het coronavirus.

Not surprisingly, my own image of Texas (mainly derived from Hollywood movies and country songs) doesn't conform to reality. Eelco Bosch van Rosenthal takes us to a culturally diverse place where progressive movements are taking hold as much as elsewhere in the United States. Although the last two episodes show the intensely cynical sides of the oil industry and the Republican efforts to sideline black voters. More journalistic in nature than NPO travel programs sometimes are; it's really about the topics and Rosenthal's journey is an afterthought. 'The Battle of Texas' formed an excellent context around the publication of current news bulletins about, for example, the rapidly falling oil prices or Texas' difficulties with the corona virus.
