Otherwise.

I hadn't read up on the film beforehand, but I actually just expected this to be a kind of monster movie but then in the French countryside. The title is literally "The Swarm" but unfortunately you won't see much of this swim. Fortunately I didn't think the alternative was that bad.

The Swarm is a quiet drama film that slowly but surely builds up to a fairly uncomfortable thriller. Unfortunately, as a viewer you will first have to struggle through some introductory images, which are unfortunately presented rather standardly. Typically mother versus daughter actually. Puberty is dawning and the mother has a hard time dealing with it. A popular theme.

It is mixed with some fantasy indeed, because the concept itself about an aggressive swimming locusts has not been used often. You would think that only SyFy comes up with such ideas, but director Philippot makes a nice attempt to explore it a bit further than SyFy does. It is just not always that captivating, and that is the main mistake.

Visually still quite nice, although I miss some cinematographic added value. There is no real atmosphere while the film needs it. I also miss the playing with insect phobia a bit, because this film offers a unique opportunity for that. In the end it goes much more to the drama side and that of course does not sit well with the audience.

Despite the fact that this film is not original and has little tension, I thought it included nice effects and had a nice pace. The finale can be called quite strong, and saves the film from a failing grade. Furthermore, The Swarm is a film that simply promotes itself wrongly, because you naturally expect an insect horror film, but you will not get that with this film.

What negative reactions here This is just a strange horror film that gradually manages to touch the viewer through the drama, the nasty thoughts surrounding the subject and the illusion. You get to see a lot of beautiful shots of the locusts, even when they become aggressive. The scenes with the goat and the dog are effective horror elements. And there are still victims. So there is enough going on in terms of horror, although you may not always see it, but just the thought of it can be enough. The subject and its development are nasty and bizarre anyway: a mother who, despite family problems and a possible bankruptcy, still does everything she can to keep her farm and the breeding of locusts going. The way she does that is pure horror. The acting is certainly convincing. I had initially let the film pass given the negative reviews here, but this just goes to show that you should always give the film a chance. 7/10

Very mediocre French horror in which the viewer is mainly fed suggestively. Is cataloged under French Extremity, but does not really pass this test. No gore, no brutality, no horror either, unfortunately. Unless you are horrified by large insects, of which there are plenty. The grasshoppers regularly appear up close in the picture.

The fact that they become aggressive and bigger from drinking blood did raise some expectations for me, especially when the inevitable happens, when they escape. But it remains a blank slate in that regard.

In addition, rather a drama and coming of age of a struggling single mother with two teenagers who are considered pariahs by the local community with their bizarre activities. If you look at the film like that, quite entertaining, but the horror lover will return from a empty journey.
