Cielo sulla Palude plot

The story is set in 1902 in the Pontine Marshes, a disease-ridden region near Rome. Maria Goretti, a twelve-year-old girl, lives with her parents, poor farmhands, in the house of Serenelli, a heavy drinker who has offered them room and board. The farmer has a son, Alessandro, eighteen years old, who is sexually attracted to the pious girl. Maria resists his advances, but things go from bad to worse...
