Based on a doomed love affair, the film paints a rather fatalistic picture of life in the Weimar Republic in the years before the Nazi takeover. Despite the good acting of the protagonists Tom Schilling and Saskia Rosendahl, the film did not really appeal to me. I thought it was (too) long.

Film based on a novel by Erich Kästner and I think partly autobiographical. Rather long-winded and bombastic, I read here, and that is true. The title is also rather bombastic and is not really lived up to by the story. In addition: the story is told in a rather fragmentary way, which means you get little feeling for the somewhat abrasive main character, more of a bad luck character than a hero. Otherwise it is also a beautiful love story, and Saskia Rosendahl is a picture. What makes the film stand out is the way in which pre-war Berlin is brought back to life, alternating with authentic images of the city, which are cleverly alternated with the 'present'. No expense or effort seems to have been spared, and it must be said, Tom Schilling and Saskia Rosendahl are excellently acted. So there are pluses and minuses.
