An intense and gripping documentary. Intense to see this man's struggle between wanting to live and die, and the effort everything costs him. Nice to see the images of the time when he was younger and in better shape, but also sad to see how he was at the end of his life, although I liked to see that he also had some pretty good moments. I think it's a real, sincere and sensitive documentary. 4*

Eighty-year-old Michael Hellgardt is an 83-year-old artist who, despite his physical limitations, still lives in a stairwell on an Amsterdam canal. At the beginning of this vanity-smelling documentary (it was Hellgardt's own idea), he proclaims that he is tired of living and wants to plan his death. His doctor manages to persuade him with the necessary caution to postpone his decision for a while: he has already changed his mind several times. We see him struggle with all the physical discomforts of an almost worn out (and scrawny) body. If he complains one time about the hopelessness of his existence, then he next complains about the fact that he is going to the Concertgebouw one more time and is therefore not yet ready to die. Always the same song. Photo albums show that he used to be a bon vivant. But yeah, that doesn't make him special either. Or interesting.
