I didn't even know it existed, but Robbe De Hert's "Hollywood aan de Scheldt" made me aware of it.

It is of course about those Flemish films from the 1950s, clearly with predominantly Antwerp roots, and with the sole aim of providing popular entertainment and diversion.

"What Do We Do With Love" by Jefke Bruyninckx is one of those, and I suspect not the least successful. The presence of Anny Andersen, who later developed an international singing career, would not have been strange to this.

It is funny to find, in addition to the inevitable Charles Janssens, the Casiers brothers, as sultans, and Romain Deconinck as the ship's cook and Dora Van Der Groen as an entertaining nurse.

A musical comedy - I still remembered the song with the same title - that unfortunately contains a silly screwball towards the end, otherwise I would have given it, in a generous mood, a 3.5.

One from a bygone era. Many big names participate, including the ever-sympathetic Charles Janssens. Also the debut of Wies Andersen. And worth mentioning are nDora Van der Groen, Ghent icon Romain De Coninck and Antwerp icons De Woodpeckers. So it is a nostalgic trip with the grandeur of a cruise that departs from the world port of Antwerp. The humor is sometimes fun but just as often corny. But that doesn't matter and it is also somehow related to the spirit of the times. It is also a musical film. There is a lot of show and singing on board the cruise ship. The music is in real jazz / easy listening style. The then very young Anni Anderson acts and sings (or is it the other way around). The title song of the film should actually be an evergreen.

Despite all the talent present, it sometimes comes across as too theatrical. It is about actors who are used to being on stage and not so much in front of the camera. A problem that many films from the past suffered from.

The film did well at the box office during that time. The casting was smart by using popular actors from the central cities, which certainly contributed to national popularity.
