Nice documentary film again from ARTE. When historians agree with each other, there is little to argue with. Évelyne Lever is an authority on Marie Antoinette, so I won't start there either. At most, I would prefer an actress with more bosom. But Maud Wyler's facial expressions more than make up for this. The setting of the show trial is beautifully depicted by the director. The arrest of Marie Antoinette's lawyers immediately after their plea is also telling for the course of events. Sad is the fate of the dauphin, Louis Charles, who will die a few years after the death of his mother after a degrading captivity.

And yes, as bravely and unmoved as Marie Antoinette faced her fate, how different was this with those who condemned her. Hébert, who fainted several times on the way to the scaffold. The executioner Sanson played to the audience by lowering the ax several times just above Hébert's neck. The invalid Couthon who, due to a head wound sustained during his arrest, screamed in pain for more than fifteen minutes because he could not easily be put on the plank or Robespierre who screamed when his bandage was pulled from his jaw. The spectators actually cheered even louder at him than at the execution of the royal couple.
