Although the introductory text suggests otherwise, this isn't so much an ode to femininity as a compelling account of the vast cultural differences women face. Two thousand women (not all of whom, of course, get a chance to speak) stare straight into the camera as they discuss topics ranging from makeup, sex, and menstruation to abortion, abuse, and genital mutilation. Content-wise, it's a well-balanced mix of shocking, moving, interesting, and humorous stories.

"Woman" is excellent as long as it lets the women speak for themselves, but the carefully orchestrated interludes give it an artificiality that clashes with the filmmakers' intentions. While it may start off as a completely one-sided broadcast of "The Better Sex," this is much more than a tribute to femininity, and that's a good thing, because the central message is just as important for men as it is for women. Which moments stuck with me the most? The woman in geisha makeup who reveals half of her true face and the Irish woman who, after some hesitation, makes a deeply personal revelation.

Bah, as if only women suffer, the fact is that women are by far the most protected sex today and have the most luxury ever in our Western society.

Men never complain about this and statistically have it much harder, but if you complain you get attention.
