Very fun, catchy documentary that focuses on the birth and early days of Motown in 1958, until the move to Los Angeles in the early 1970s. Lots of great archive material, fun anecdotes and of course beautiful music. Let's just say they don't make them like this anymore.

That so-called messy, with numerous anecdotes, recordings of record reviews (to release or not? Will it be a hit? Then we'll do it!) And reenacted conversations about the creation of songs, I find a great charm of the whole. Moreover, the whole history was neatly explained, with fair self-criticism as the label failed a bit in terms of connection with the zeitgeist.

I didn't know that people often gave songs a second life / jacket ('...Grapevine'!), very nice. Furthermore, two sympathetic guests, those Gordy and Robinson, but there were more interesting and fun contributions. I find less interesting than such an actor (name forgotten) or others from newer generations - good wine needs no wreath, that idea.

The anecdote about 1 or 2 black guys selling newspapers in a white neighborhood is gold, by the way, and the disagreement that is settled with the $100 bet just shows how treacherous memory can be...

A nice long documentary and just a compliment to NPO that has been broadcasting quite a few in full length lately, keep it up.

Of course Motown is a very rewarding subject in terms of names and legendary music.

But this documentary, as I've read here, is indeed very contagious.

Very nice (for me largely unknown) fragments of performances, nice interviews of actually relevant people and a pleasant structure.

The only thing you can perhaps say as a counterpoint is that in the history of the company really hard and tough decisions have been made that may be a bit underexposed.

But also a huge feel-good documentary, at least for me.

And if you also end with 1 of my big favorites Heatwave then I'm done.
