Good film in which an entertainer finds it difficult to get a foothold until he takes on the character Dolemite. A reasonably light-hearted and easy-looking biopic about Rudy Ray Moore. The movie is set in the 70s and the whole decoration is fine. The scenes in which the film is recorded are the best. Eddie Murphy is not only well cast, but also does well in the title role.

Eddie Murphy, where do I know that one from again? When I was younger and watched toppers like Trading Places, Coming to America and Beverly Hills Cop, it was even my favorite actor for a while. I even got to enjoy The Nutty Professor. His last film I saw is Daddy Day Care, over fifteen years ago. The problem with Eddie's films is that the screenplays are often too stupid for words with too many double roles, but with Dolemite is My Name he has landed a role that is just right for him and with that he makes a successful comeback.
Without any prior knowledge of Rudy Ray Moore or Dolemite, I went into the film, basically because I felt like a typical blaxploitation. The decoration and atmosphere is perfect from the start. I even had the idea of watching a Shaft for a while, funny that they refer to this several times later in the film itself. Moore starts out as a stand-up comedian in bars but soon sets out to conquer the world. The level of jokes often gets no further than a motherfucking cocksucker beating up a motherfucking pussy. It's very flat, 'typically black', and not really for me, but Eddie manages to bring his part with so much energy that it still entertains.
When they start making the film, things get even more fun. With great effort a budget is gathered and filming is done with amateurs on an old, ramshackle location. In addition to funny faces such as Odenkirk, Snoop Dogg, Rock and Epps, Wesley Snipes also comes out from under the dust. I know him mainly from Blade and tax fraud, but now after all these years I hardly recognized him anymore with those thirty kilos extra and bright colored dresses. But nice to see him again.
Nice to learn a bit more about Moore through a light-hearted video like this. Not a rise & fall story for a change, but just a feel-good film without victims or enemies who want to diminish the success.

Entertaining film that reminded me of The Disaster Artist and Be Kind Rewind. Both the boundless ambition of the one and the passion for making film of the other. A film that is especially very relaxing to watch because of the good energy.
I wasn't familiar with Dolomite myself, but that doesn't say everything. He is clearly a cult hero and his story is entertaining enough for a full-fledged movie.
Nice atmosphere, good music, some very funny moments and an inspiring story.
