So Was von Da is about portraying a sense of life. The attitude towards life of Oskar Wrobel who is the owner of a shabby dance club in Hamburg and has debts but prefers not to think about it. After all, it's about the present. It's about living in the moment and not worrying about consequences and responsibilities. The future is of course there, but you don't have to take that into account. And the past? Oh well, I've heard of it. Did that actually exist?

So Was von Da is the film adaptation of a novel by Tino Hanekamp. I have not read the novel and therefore do not know how much of the book was actually released on film, but I did read that the casting call for extras stated, among other things, the following: 'The dialogues from the novel are not intended to be reproduced . The intention is that the sense of life that the novel radiates is captured on film.' People were looking for partygoers to stir up a sense of life. In my opinion, this means that the real actors did not have to reproduce any dialogues, shouting and partying, under more or less authentic festive circumstances in a real Hamburg club. And that works well. Authenticity is no guarantee for a good film.

The film is quite unstructured. As if in found footage, the floating camera maneuvers through the festivities. All tricks are pulled out. Timelapse, double exposure, split screen, jump cut. They do not lead to a compelling film. They lead to confusion. A common thread cannot be distinguished. It made me a little restless. What does all this lead to? To nothing, I feared. And I was right. At dawn the partygoers leave the club. They look the way I feel. Lousy.
