M.R. - Het Universum van Kunstschilder Matthijs Röling plot

Matthijs Röling is one of our best-known figurative artists. In recent decades, he has transformed the estate that he lives in in the north of the country into a universe of its own. As spring turns into summer in the gardens of his estate, then autumn and then winter, Matthijs Röling looks back on a long, artistic career.

Matthijs Röling's work is beautiful, but the documentary is typically Dutch in its meaninglessness: the camera alternates between images of the garden and images of Röling in a chair saying something uninteresting (e.g. that he often sat on the balcony, that he likes to solve Sudokus, etc), so that after seeing the documentary you know almost as little about the artist and his work as before. The only relevant thing I learned is that Röling does not paint out of social commitment (he just thinks art is beautiful) and that he just does what he likes: his work has no preconceived goal or thought behind it, he just does what comes to mind . The documentary seems to do the same – no questions, no voice over, no direction, no structure, no message, but random images and a muttering, hard to understand Röling who says some things haphazardly – but with a much less intriguing result. The good thing about the documentary is that it made me aware of Röling's work.
