"Rule # 1: Whatever happens, nothing is true: it's just a game. Rule # 2: One of you is going to die."

Lucas and Chloe are two passionate gamers. When they discover "Paranoia", an extremely exclusive escape room, they can't help but participate. After solving the first riddle, they get to the second location: an abandoned psychiatric hospital in the middle of a threatening forest. They are met by four other participants. The group begins to make their way out of the hospital, but it soon becomes clear that the rules are different from what they expected.

Pretty okay.

It is an Escape Room related, because that is not bad because there have been quite a few films released recently around the same theme. A little variation can't hurt, especially within a genre that is not immediately known for originality.

A clear European vibe, that is to say a little less slick, but also a little grimmer. The setup is a little smarter than the average escape room movie, on the other hand it does lead to the same kind of scenes. A kind of Fort Boyard, but a little more deadly.

Play or Die is gory when necessary, has a solid plot and is also quite atmospheric at times. However, they don't really go all out, it remains a film that colors fairly neatly within the lines. Nice filler, that's for sure, but it's not much more than that.

3.0*

Play or Die is one such film that saw the light of day in the wake of the successful Escape Room (2019). However, the script is based on the French novel Puzzle by Franck Thilliez, which was published in 2013. Although the film (compared to its peers) does not excel in originality, you could say that the basic material does.

In Play or Die we follow two teenagers who get caught up in a labyrinth of escape rooms. A challenge that they voluntarily accept, inspired as they are by the enormous amount of money that can be won. Various rooms and difficult riddles pass by. It is a matter of life and death and the blood flows freely. Play or Die is not averse to sadistic violence. It is cruel and aggressive. Not a film with polished images, but a film with raw and hard moments.

A film also with a disturbing and dark atmosphere that is emphasized by experimental gimmicks with color effects. In addition to gray, grimy images, a nice overkill of luminous blue and powerful red impregnations appears. The entourage is atmospheric and creates tension. It is then so annoying that the miserable coloring of the characters contrasts so negatively with the nice setting. You learn almost nothing about the characters and the experience is therefore quite distant. Ready or Not focuses on the riddles and the (sometimes) bloody consequences that not solving the riddles (or not solving them in time) has as a result. This approach results in an entertaining, although also somewhat clichéd film. With a little more attention for the characters, Ready or Not might have been a good film.
