The winner of a BAFTA for best British debut film is a pretentious, amateurish mess. While passionate film buffs often spend many years digitally restoring damaged, partly worn negatives, director/screenwriter Mark Jenkin thought it a good idea to present this fishing drama with (deliberate) 'damage' and flickering images. The only justification for that style could be that it aims to give the impression that we are watching a story from the first half of the last century. And although this is about the struggle between tradition and modernization in a small fishing village, no effort has been made in terms of appearance to place that story in a historical era. The acting is often just as amateurish as the sometimes downright appalling camerawork. The editing does indeed evoke memories of the very first years of cinema, but mainly because of the amateurism and lack of creativity.

Deliberately ugly design, low budget drama shot in black and white about the struggle of a fisherman without a boat (Edward Rowe) against the advancing tourism in his native village. Plot and characters are captivating, but the minimalistic visual approach and sporadic amateurish acting definitely detract from the punch. Bait certainly has its moments, but this debut from director Mark Jenkin is not very special.
