When the American Civil War breaks out, a French family is forced to flee their home in Missouri and return to Paris. Edmond, the patriarch, is accompanied by his wife Madeleine, their three daughters Esther, Justine and Abigaelle, and their maid Layla. Esther is strongly attracted to the former hit man Victor who guides the group. When his past catches up with him, it creates friction within the group.
