Genèse plot

Sixteen-year-old Guillaume attends a private school where he is only too happy to make a splash. He finds a best friend in Nicolas, for whom he cherishes feelings some time later. With this, his apparent arrogance crumbles little by little. Guillaume's slightly older half-sister Charlotte has a relationship with Maxime, but it is far from perfect. So brother and sister have to find their way in a world that offers them no certainties or guidelines. While others adapt, they hold their own, standing up for their right to love and be free.

The last act of Philippe Lesages GENÈSE is of great beauty: it captures the frisky feelings of a growing generation, somewhere between campfire and low-hanging tree leaves. During the Q&A after the festival premiere, this fragmentary final piece caused some confusion. Didn't we initially spend an hour and a half watching the story of two teenagers, which after a violent climax had fizzled out? Why had Lesage felt the need to start a new story? The modest responses of the Canadian filmmaker (Les démons) implicitly echoed a refreshing wish: can we examine, change, question scripting conventions? Perhaps that is the most important key to enriching festival cinema: attracting filmmakers who stretch the standard formulas [coming of age] and provide them with a new impetus.

The story of this film about young people struggling with love is not very special in itself. However, that does not apply to the rising stars of the Canadian film firmament Théodore Pellerin, Noée Abita and to a lesser extent Émilie Bierre. Too bad about the soundtrack, because it is sometimes not to listen to

There are quite nice coming-of-age elements in it, with a talented cast, but the lack of tension bothered me a bit too much.
