Finally a breath of fresh air through the dried-up Dutch film climate, with all those crazy rom-coms that affect our eyes and have caused a general creative malaise. A nice plot, dialogues of sentences longer than five words, acting is also fine, the pace is good and now and then a good joke: "Oh, Zuid called that there is a cat in the tree. Can you help?" "Maybe you should go there? You haven't had a cat in so long."

The squatters' movement, the eighties, it all looks believable enough, but of course there is always room for improvement. The clothing is okay, the pin through the nose I found just a bit too much.

And Ryanne van Dorst as pathologist (Dr. Resteloos), who just plays herself haha.. You couldn't do better than cast them, with her ashen-pale skin and greasy raven-black hair.

You shouldn't see this film because of the poor story, but because of the atmosphere. The squatters' environment is well typified and it is also striking what a filthy mess it was at that time. We now know Amsterdam as a tourist paradise with cute canals, but in the 80s it was almost a war zone. Furthermore, Tygo Gernandt is back on track with a bold role. A bit overacted perhaps, but at least something happens when he comes into the picture. Baantjer, the beginning is more fun than that dull old Baantjer. Looking forward to the series.

Somewhere there is still the Amsterdam nostalgia hidden from the original series, but 'Baantjer het Begin' (2019) is clearly harder, rawer and more grim in tone. My Baantjer-loving mother watched with slight annoyance how it has become a roller coaster ride full of unintelligible Jordanian dialogue, hard action and a moral darkness in which the good can no longer be distinguished from the bad. For me, the film works best when it is no more than an atmospheric portrait in which veteran Tonnie Montijn (Tygo Gernandt) takes the righteous Urker Jurre de Cock (Waldemar Torenstra) into the Amsterdam underworld. The Wild West where prostitutes beckon in their tendon rooms and people criminals beat their baseball bats out of squatters. Where the anarchist punk scene screams out its anger at the authorities, while police officers were allowed to hit it a little harder because laws and regulations still offered room for tough action. As an atmospheric portrait, 'Baantjer het Begin' (2019) is absolutely successful (and invites you to follow the accompanying series), but it is a pity that the spectacle has the upper hand over any subtlety. Any nuance or psychological development is blown away with predictable muscle-building stuff.
