You do learn a thing or two about the polar explorer Amundsen and his expeditions. In that respect, this is a nice addition to the famous Fram Museum in Oslo, dedicated to Norwegian polar expeditions. There's also a lot of attention given to the impassive, bitter Amundsen, who didn't interact well with people. The biographical story is told by the sailor's brother to a good friend. An informative film, with beautiful polar images (though clearly digital), but too encyclopedic and unemotional, which meant the film didn't make the desired impression. Towards the end, it even became rather drab.

Perhaps a documentary would have been a better way to tell Amundsen's story than this conventional film, which is rather lacking in detail. For instance, the actor portraying Amundsen spends three-quarters of the film sporting a mustache that looks extremely fake, and he doesn't even remotely resemble the "real" Amundsen. Worse than that, the timing isn't quite right either, despite the somewhat forced narrative and Bess Magids's perspective. Incidentally, it's the only role that's played decently, thanks to Katherine Waterston.

It's a shame, because there's actually quite a story to be told about Amundsen – Espen Sandberg just manages to convey that, even though the film subsequently neglects it. Perhaps a bit overstated, perhaps a bit too focused on the technology, perhaps a budget that's a bit too tight for the ambitions.
