Silence of the Tides plot

Cinematographic portrait based on the continuous 'breathing' of the Wadden, against a backdrop of light, fog, wind, water and land. The film observes the inhalation and exhalation of the tides and the recurring cycles and contrasts of nature, light, sound and man. The film raises the question whether the Wadden Islands belong to the water or the land, but above all it gives shape and meaning to the existence of the Wadden region and its inhabitants.

This documentary about the Wadden, the people who live and work there and visit the Wadden, the research that is being carried out there, and the army that exercises deafeningly there, has almost become the ultimate nature documentary.

Why ultimate?

Finally no off-screen voice that tells me in the present tense what meaning to give to the images ("The males fight for the attention of the female"), finally no off-screen music that wants to influence my mood (now it's exciting finally no hodgepodge of restless camera shots and images that lack coherence, finally no palette of technical highlights (except for the time lapse).

Finally, a nature documentary offers the viewer space to give meaning to the images in a coherent timeline of the seasons that begins with winter, in which a number of motifs ensure recognisability: the spoonbill and her young, the Brandaris watchman, following the canoe, the church organ and the railway postman who starts and ends. I don't think I saw a single movement of the camera.

Why almost ultimate?

The temptation of the technique turned out to be too great: sometimes slow motion, too much time lapse to depict ebb and flow, the organ ultimately directs the viewer's gaze, and the subtle soundtrack regularly loses every nuance in volume and in dubbing of animal and environmental sounds.

Special:

As far as I know, with one exception (final slaughterhouse scene), I have not heard any silence...

De Kroon filmed at various locations in the UNESCO-protected Wadden area to show how people live there in balance with the unique flora and fauna. In contrast to the recent Wild documentaries, there is (fortunately) no family-friendly commentary here, so that you as a viewer are always actively watching. The visuals and soundtrack are brilliant, but the lack of structure or narrative makes it difficult to keep your attention.

Beautifully filmed documentary about life on and around the Wadden Sea. It takes some getting used to the lack of a voice-over and music, but gradually the visual beauty begins to have an almost hypnotic effect. Not all selected fragments are equally fascinating and/or relevant, but overall this documentary is quite impressive, not least because of the phenomenal camera work.
