Fascinating film adaptation of Edna Ferber's novel about the wood industry around the turn of the last century. A love drama with an implicit criticism of the large-scale demolition that was (and is) committed on the forests. Like Ferber's Giant (1956) about the oil industry, it is a gripping story through its romantic entanglements against the background of capitalism.

The four protagonists are a joy to watch. It's the only film by the tragic Frances Farmer I've seen to date, but it leaves me wanting more.

The film has a wild start with, among other things, salon fights that also become jolly with trays

thrown. Then a short impression of how things are going at the (Massal)_wood extraction

in the woods.

The film completely changes tone when the protagonist has worked his way up to a

rich gentleman and there is more room for romantic-dramatic entanglements. Both

parts as I will call it, I found satisfying mainly thanks to the acting

from Edward Arnold. The film closes nicely, to which the film is clearly titled

thank.

I actually expected that things between Arnold and Joel's characters would escalate much further than what we saw now, it remained a bit obedient now with the final plot while the tension clearly built up to a much more intense denouement .
Nevertheless, it has become an entertaining film and Arnold's enthusiastic performance is partly to blame.
