Reasonable.

The film starts off a bit rough. The mix between addiction drama and vampire film is rather difficult, especially because the pace is also quite low and the film takes its time to explain everything. The first half hour is therefore easily the toughest.

What follows is a modern take on the vampire thing, but in a slightly more serious way (or actually, not in a young adult way). It's not much more than a run-of-the-mill horror, but when the killing starts it gets noticeably more interesting.

Visually it is decent, but that is what you can expect from Blumhouse films these days. They usually put a bit more money into their films. Acting is okay, soundtrack mostly unremarkable. And those who come for the gore can adjust their expectations, but the vampire genre is rarely really gory and exciting.

For once quite decent, better than most vampire movies even, but it's not really my favorite genre.

3.0*

Absolutely no jump scares, even though the director does use them that way. Without effect. The film is just long-winded and slow. Not to get through. The story certainly has potential and definitely hits the right note in some areas. Mainly the first 45 minutes of the film and with regard to the mother's addiction problems, little to complain about. More drama/thriller than horror.

Nice combination of soft horror elements and drama, partly due to a fairly original approach from director Sonny Mallhi. His direction results in a number of unusual images and effective music choices, despite the lack of tension. Family Blood does not breathe the threat that the main situation should bring with it, only the opening about a certain degree of danger. Fortunately, there is some nice acting by Vinessa Shaw and James Ransone. The children are less convincing and the finale goes on just a bit too long, but in the end the film as a whole remains unpredictable and unusual enough not to bore.
