My record may stick, but again there is clear potential in the film where an overprotective mother keeps an eye on her daughter's doings. Overprotection is more detrimental than just letting a child be a child in a world that is not always kind. Also reminds me of children who are not allowed to play in the sand because otherwise they would get sick. Pure paranoia at times when there is zero privacy left for the daughter. It is therefore a great shock when you notice that your daughter is lying to you (for the first time), although that is normal in itself.
52 minutes is not long and the episode moves along quietly without really increasing the tension. It all remains ordinary. Also very predictable, even though I thought a live suicide was also a possibility. Also all quite clichéd: sex, drugs and rock & roll, it's all covered. The ideas are always good, but the elaboration or elaboration remains poor. Just a few more to go...

This was the first episode of Black Mirror to be directed by a woman. Great choice of course, but it's a shame that they appoint Foster to get that job done. Don't think she's the best director in the film world, and not here either.
The passing grade I give to the episode is mainly due to the story itself, which does something new in the Black Mirror world. There are a number of typical Black Mirror elements involved, although I must say that this is a bit less BM than a lot of other episodes from previous seasons.
Foster uses some unusual direction at times. The camera is often pushed into the faces or backs of characters, probably to create a more raw feeling. However, this feels a bit too forced. Although I must say that the environment is old-fashioned (successfully) depressing.
The acting is also fine. DeWitt manages to give just enough strength to her mother character, although the character is a bit too short and fleeting to make an impression. The episode itself is entertaining and the concept is nice, but the execution goes a bit too much towards standard cinema instead of BM cinema.
The ending is solid, and the episode itself is relatively short and not boring. Perhaps a bit predictable here and there and certainly one of the lesser episodes in the series, but it is still just good enough for a narrow pass.

Basically a classic sci-fi setting; a future gadget and then see what it brings. The gadget has potential, but the effect is weak. It becomes a fairly standard teenage story and the (development in the) mother-daughter relationship is the main focus. I don't watch BM for that kind of drama. Nice BM-worthy technique, poor delivery.
