Herrliche Zeiten plot

A rich married man is looking for a new housekeeper for his luxurious villa. He posts a far-fetched ad online that says "slave required". It's a joke. A cynical joke, but ultimately one that brings Bartos and his young wife Lana into their home, changing his and his wife's life forever. Many things go wrong and for the wealthy couple who have led a life of carefree prosperity until now, this has fatal consequences.

Enjoyable, despite sometimes being extremely violent, this black satire that criticizes the triviality of a very rich couple.

It seems to be heading for a predictable progression and conclusion, the latter does contain surprising twists, although I expected a bit more subtlety, but that is not exactly what the makers are aiming for. To shock, to act absurd seems more the message in an atmosphere of haughty and irresponsible rich man stuff, sophisticated deception and... harsh reality.

Oliver Masucci, Katja Rieman and Samuel Finzi are all firmly in their roles.

The film is somewhat reminiscent of das Experiment, in which a division into guards and prisoners exposes the deep abysses in human nature. Those who have power over others use it and lose their inhibitions. Das Experiment is a thriller. In Herrliche Zeiten the approach is different. The film focuses on lightheartedness when the wealthy couple Claus and Evi are given two humble servants.

Claus and Evi are two remarkable characters. Claus is an amoral narcissist who doesn't care about other people. He is a caricature. His wife Evi is much more of a real person. She is in possession of a moral compass and is the guarantee that the two servants are not judged purely on their usefulness, but are also seen and treated as human beings. She is the bastion that prevents the peculiar constellation of the four characters from turning into a situation of old-fashioned slavery. Or maybe not.

It is clear that Herrliche Zeiten does not intend to be realistic. The film presents a grotesque situation and fuels it with a lot of humor. Sometimes it's fun. Sometimes less fun. In any case, the film shows the ugly side of so-called civilized people in a cheerful way. The humor is nice, but not particularly subtle and, in my opinion, it goes into exaggeration towards the end to such an extent that the satirical sharpness that is there in principle is completely missing. Fortunately, Herrliche Zeiten is intriguing, funny and special enough at most other moments to be an entertaining film.
