Elizabeth Harvest plot

The newlywed Elizabeth arrives with her husband Henry, a brilliant scientist, at his beautiful estate, where he seduces her with sumptuous dinners and a dazzling tour of the property. The housekeeping staff, Claire and Oliver, treat her with respect, but she can't shake the feeling that something is wrong. Henry explains that everything in his world now belongs to her. He only forbids her to enter a locked room. When he leaves on business, Elizabeth decides to investigate and discovers that she may not be who she thinks she is.

Entertaining but completely plot-driven thriller that takes on increasingly grotesque forms towards the end. These types of films always turn into riddles where the outcome becomes more important than the involvement with the characters or the drama.

Due to the musical nods to the golden times of Hammer Horror, Frankenstein Ciarán Hinds increasingly resembles Christopher Lee.

Despite Abbey Lee, Elizabeth Harvest goes in one eye and out the other.

Solid first half that gradually goes off the rails afterwards with many implausible plot twists that do not benefit the story. Abbey Lee doesn't convince me, but Ciarán Hinds and Carla Gugino do. The secret is predictable and the progression is also recognizable from other films, although here too much attention is paid to strange, sudden twists than to the characters. It's striking how your attention also weakens towards the end. 5/10

The film starts off strong - very strong. But the plot is too weak and falls apart halfway through, somewhere in a mix of too many rabbits out of a hat and predictable twists. Visually very strong, with heavy reliance on Abbey Lee's blue eyes and red hair.

In terms of atmosphere, the film is strongly reminiscent of Ex Machina (2014), perhaps especially because of the setting in an opulent house with forbidden doors that do not open. Nicely played by the strong cast, although there are some mistakes at the end in my opinion - but then the film has lost almost all tension.
