Arjan's Big Year plot
The young birder Arjan Dwarshuis traveled the world in 2016 to spot as many bird species as possible in one year. His goal: to break the previous record. He will have to see more than 6000 bird species. Arjan visited more than forty countries for this, he walked the highest mountain ranges, the hottest deserts and the most remote tropical rainforests. In 'Arjan's Big Year' we see Arjan at various bird hotspots around the world. His determination and perseverance are beautifully displayed during the many highs and lows of the quest.

Birdwatcher Arjan Dwarshuis is using 2017 as a "Big Year"; a year in which he aims to spot as many different bird species as possible. His goal: to break the world record (6,042 species) and reach a total of 7,000. Sulawesi, the Netherlands, Ghana, and Suriname receive special attention, but even those sequences consist of little more than Arjan and his friends prowling around, spotting, filming, or photographing birds. Much of it consists of snippets (of a few seconds at most) from Arjan's vlogs and a counter that runs on-screen. Arjan occasionally claims (unconvincingly) that he serves a higher purpose, but he also compares himself to David Attenborough! It's largely an ego document with a certain degree of hypocrisy.
