Fine Bousman.

Is someone who has neatly detached himself from the Saw series (although he does direct the new part) to build his own career. Not someone with a very explicit own style, but still knows how to deliver atmospheric horrors, this one was not disappointing either.

A bit more towards the psychological side indeed, although there is also some gore to report here and there. Not that much, but of the effective kind. Furthermore, a film that mainly has to rely on the atmosphere, not so much on the tension. And fortunately, that atmosphere is good, thanks to a beautiful setting and good acting.

It is of course not very original or innovative, but you really don't have to go to Bousman for that. Typical work for the genre lover, I think most people will be able to enjoy this film. It is not really great, but very solid filler. A bit what I expect from Bousman by now. So it does not disappoint.

3.5*

Quite a nice psychological horror work in which the cast and the atmosphere are the assets.

The location provides a beautiful setting and atmospheric scenes.

A few effective horror elements here and there and enough tension present.

A horror film that doesn't really surprise you, but does have the necessary underlying tension to remain captivating from start to finish. 7/10

Horror director Darren Lynn Bousman often seeks out pure genre work and tries to add enough originality to it to prevent it from becoming boring. With St. Agatha he only experiences mixed success in that respect, because despite the unpredictable course, the ideas and underlying concepts are not always brought together very well. The acting is also mediocre, which means that a lot of protagonists and antagonists regularly come across as uninteresting. Fortunately, Bousman goes in search of visual beauty, which means that a number of scenes come across as well-thought-out and colorful. The film also goes remarkably far to provide it all with a gloomy tone, but cannot compensate for the relatively long playing time with much success.
