With her evocative lyrics ("If I'm in Luck I Might Get Picked Up") and daring outfits, funk singer Betty Davis was way ahead of her time. Maybe too far. "If Betty were singing today, she'd be a Madonna; or a Prince," jazz trumpeter Miles Davis wrote in his 1989 autobiography. Davis married Betty in 1968, taking his surname—which she kept after their divorce in 1969. Betty - They Say I'm Different, named after her second album from 1974, uses interviews with family members, friends and ex-band members to investigate why this 'bold soul sister' withdrew from the music industry in the late 1970s.
