De Rode Ziel plot
The Red Soul exposes the psyche of the contemporary Russian, thus revealing a world full of contradictions. In a mosaic of portraits of ordinary Russians, young and old, stories of victory and pain alternate. Proud stories of how the country prospered under the communist ideal contrast with painful memories of hunger, violence and betrayal. Not infrequently, these paradoxical views appear to have settled in one person. Struggles with the past are in stark contrast to the heroic image of a land of victors propagated by the present state. Jessica Gorter does not attempt to adopt a moral standpoint from this complex perspective, but rather seeks the connections between fears and atrocities on the one hand and pride and ideals on the other. Gradually an image unfolds of people in a country in confusion, where the youth seems to want to hold onto the lesson that pride is more important than memory.
