Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda plot
Japanese-born documentary filmmaker Stephen Nomura Schible spent 5 years working on this portrait of Japanese composer, musician and electronics pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto. During that period, he got throat cancer, from which he has since been cured. The eternal aesthete Sakamoto tells very little about the last years of his private life. The contrast with the openness with which he elaborates on his influences, ambitions or working methods is striking. The groundbreaking music of the Yellow Magic Orchestra, his soundtracks for 'The Last Emperor' (he won an Oscar for it) or 'The Revenant', and how Sakamoto accumulates and incorporates natural sounds into his compositions - these are just some of the subjects in this documentary about one of the most elusive musicians of his generation.
