Oude Liefde plot
Two divorced sixties meet for the first time after many years when their 40-year-old son suddenly dies. In the months that follow, they seek comfort from each other and their old love flares up again. They enjoy an innocent affair, which they try to keep a secret from their family. However, that turns out to be more complicated than anticipated. Just like pushing away unprocessed problems from the past. Before they know it, like their families, they become entangled in the consequences of this great love.

When their youngest son Roland [Leo Alkemade] dies of a heart attack on his 40th birthday, father Fer [Gene Bervoets] and mother Fransje [Beppie Melissen] meet again for the first time in a long time. They have been divorced for many years and have both found someone else, but, as the title suggests, old love never dies and the recurring feelings between these two sixty-somethings (who know how to mislead their loved ones all too easily) cause a lot of confusion between Fer and Fransje, especially when their granddaughter gets wind of the renewed relationship.
Peer Wittenbols' screenplay has its weaknesses, including the less than successful comic relief in the form of Roland's sister Hilde [Eva van der Gucht], the stereotypical chubby girl with borderline syndrome. Carly Wijs and Aus Greidanus are saddled with insufficiently developed, somewhat thankless roles as the current partners of Fer and Fransje. Gene Bervoets' performance is also somewhat mannered. But Halina Reijn is fine as the eldest sister and Melissen's acting is natural and authentic. The inevitable final confrontation leaves the film's strongest moment to the subtly playing Hadewych Minis as Roland's widow. All in all, 'Oude Liefde' has more positive points than weaknesses and you don't have to ignore it.

Good film about an older divorced couple who get back together after their son dies. Partly a film about grieving, but even more about renewed old love. Some good scenes with awkward family situations that are reinforced by the grief. Sometimes funny, sometimes touching, sometimes sentimental. Good acting by the entire cast.
