The first minute is a promising preview of what is to come. Blood, torture, humiliation, mutilation. You name it.

Before we get to that point, we first plow through the introduction of the uninteresting characters for 45 minutes, and we play the games Hit and Run and Hide and Seek. We do this with the cruel crime and with the victims to be. In other words, the structure and further development of the story take a long time, are predictable and are not exciting.

In the last twenty minutes, horror takes the place of predictable action. Blood, torture and gore are featured. Not very explicitly, by the way. The camera barely shows the real cruelty. With the camera close to the skin, often pinned to the faces and using non-confrontational camera angles, most of the cruelty remains out of the picture. With a few exceptions. What the images do not do, the sounds do. The matching sounds leave nothing to the imagination.

Now I have to honestly say that after watching the long and uninteresting foreplay I wasn't exactly looking forward to any kind of filth. As a 'functional' part of a story and as a means of strengthening empathy, I think it's okay, but purely for effect, it can be left alone.

And luckily that happened here.

Director Sam Curtain comes up with an entertaining work in which a lot is done with a small budget. What is not done as well, however, is the very long run-up, especially since Blood Hunt has (too) little to say to justify something like that. At least half of the relatively short running time is spent on scenes that barely matter, so as a viewer you mainly wait for things to get going. Once the stops are pulled out, Curtain increases the pace and packs the film with enough bloodshed and raw violence to take away any form of boredom. The lack of impressive practical effects can be forgiven, but the whole thing resorts a little too often to all kinds of trivial content elements to unnecessarily stretch the playing time.
