Sur les Traces de Fellini plot

Gérald Morin was assistant director to the Italian director Federico Fellini between 1971 and 1977. Morin was involved in the series of films he sees as Fellini's autobiography: Roma, Amarcord and Casanova. For this documentary, he returns to Italy in 2013, where, among other things, he visits the famous Cinecittà studio where Fellini gave shape to his dreams. He also goes to Fellini's hometown of Rimini, the place he memorably recreated in Amarcord.

It is incomprehensible why these kinds of documentaries are so often shortened for television – do the makers hope that the viewers who become interested in the subject as a result of such TV mutilation will then spend money on the complete version in the cinema or on DVD? This documentary was broadcast by Avro/Tros on NPO2 in 2013 or shortly after in a 50-minute version, and my review (for what it's worth) is based on that version.

A friendly look back at the period when Morin was active at Fellini's side during the first half of the 1970s. Nice to see the other employees reminiscing about that time; production designer Dante Ferretti (1943-) is probably the most famous, partly because of the three Oscars he won for his work for Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton, and there is also attention for Fellini's fascination for the circus and for the beautiful music of his court composer Nino Rota, but the most touching story is that of Magali Noël who received a phone call from Fellini himself at 2 o'clock at night in France and at 10 o'clock the next morning in Cinecittà her first scene as Gradisca in [i]Amarcord[/i ] turned. That immediately indicates what kind of documentary this is: fun for those who are familiar with Fellini's work, but I can imagine that those who are not will hardly get a clear picture of what kind of person he was and what made him very idiosyncratic. and personal film director, also because this documentary focuses on a very limited part of Fellini's career, ignoring the films from his most famous period (the 1950s and 1960s). Anyway, there's no point in criticizing this movie for what it doesn't pretend to be at all, and then my final verdict is: nice, but not nice enough for me to spend money on...
