Follow-up.

It does indeed take a while before everything gets going. A little too many visits to variants of haunted houses, which slows down the pace of the film a little. Especially that festival where people indulge in an eating competition could easily have been canceled.

But otherwise a nice reunion with a series that managed to bring something refreshing with its first part. Part 2 is a bit more of the same (although at the end they try to do a little more with the plot - a decision that you can still question) but it still works.

It remains a different world and the film feels realistic enough. The scenes when they are in the rides are by far the best, the ending is a little bit separate but still worth seeing. Nice horror, although it doesn't reach the level of the first film.

3.0*

The end of the first part is further elaborated here at the opening, and so there is a direct sequel. However, the denouement of that ending is very mediocre. Part 2 is again much of the same and so we again get a ride past various haunted houses and thrill rides, where there are actually few differences between parts 1 and 2. The characters of the haunted houses are nicely put together, which was also the case with the first part, but otherwise it is a fairly boring ride. Fortunately, that will eventually change when the group ends up at Hellbent. That is a pretty strong piece that fortunately does involve some tension. Unfortunately, after the best this film has to offer, another cringe-worthy twist follows and at the same time a mediocre ending.

Director Bobby Roe clearly found his own small success on a conceptual level with the previous part, because three years later the sequel was already around the corner. Some directors choose to take completely new directions with a sequel, but Roe repeats exactly the same thing here for 70 minutes. A little more background is added to The Houses October Built 2, but if you didn't like the first part, you will definitely not get any innovation with the sequel. The strongest scenes come from the moments with the team members entering one of those haunted house attractions, of which the cursed hay ride is the clear highlight. Touring America where the haunts are visited one by one is fun for some time, but Roe does take quite the time to go through all those parts. When things escalate again, Roe suddenly has little to do with the whole thing, just like in his first film. The ghost lady, who is depicted on both this and the poster of the previous part, does not evoke any threat and I therefore find it very strange that the makers have brought her back. Since this eventual sequel follows more or less exactly the same structure as before, I assume that a third part will not be made. The general negative signal from the public seems more than clear to me.
