Leanders Letzte Reise plot

The 92-year-old former Wehrmacht officer Eduard Leander travels to Ukraine with his granddaughter Adele, because he believes he will find the love of his life there. It is spring 2014 when a war breaks out that completely divides the country. The search for his former love becomes a journey for Leander to the place where misbehavior reigns, but also to the past, which is closely linked to the present, as he suspects.

It is clear that through the story of an old man searching for a war lover, the film emphasizes the inhumanly painful nature of warfare, not only going back to WWII but also exploiting the ongoing conflicts of today.
There are no scenes of war, only the psychological wounds of the past and the never-ending threat of new violence.
It is a pity that the film, certainly towards the end, sins a bit of over-sentimentality and brings in dramatic events that were not necessary.
Nevertheless, followed with suspense - although the acting was sometimes a bit disappointing and there was a bit - perhaps wrongly - a sense of incredibility, this film about the aftermath of WWII with interesting facts, such as the the German Cossacks alliance .

A wayward old man goes on a trip to Ukraine with his rebellious granddaughter. Two characters who prefer not to travel together. Two characters who don't know each other very well. Two characters whose worlds of experience are far apart. That sounds like a movie with room for comedy. That sounds like a film in which mutual frictions (infused with humour) are linked to the emergence of gradual mutual understanding and rapprochement. That assumption is wrong. At least in terms of humor. Actually, only in the beginning of the film there are some funny situations. And then the cake is finished. The approach of director and co-writer Nick Baker-Monteys is much more serious.

It soon becomes clear that the old man travels to Ukraine to find traces of his war past on the eastern front during the Second World War. And that is not all. Baker-Monteys intertwines this personal theme with other themes. The complex relationship between Germans and Ukrainians, for example. Current events also have a place. At the time of the trip, Russia is just in the process of annexing Crimea. The theme of the German Wehrmacht soldier who went on a terrible rampage on the Eastern Front is contrasted by Baker-Monteys with this event. The old man and his daughter travel through a divided nation that resembles a police state. The link with the past is clear. It's a bit thick.

That forced aspect also applies to the experiences of the characters. Plot lines that originated in the past met fresh plot lines. The different lines never come together naturally. It even felt a bit provisional at times. The movie doesn't tell a bad story, but it could have been told better. Perhaps the story would have been better if some of the many soap opera twists had been omitted. Speaking of forced…
