Posoki plot

"Bulgaria remains optimistic, mainly because all the realists and pessimists have left"

Bulgaria, a country that remains optimistic, especially as the realists and pessimists have left. A small business owner, who is a taxi driver to make ends meet, has a meeting with his banker. He discovers that the "bribe" he has to pay for a loan has doubled. The ethics committee that reviewed his complaint about extortion now also wants their share. In a fit of madness, he shoots the banker and then himself. The incident is receiving a lot of media attention.

A powerful mosaic drama from Bulgaria. In the prologue, we meet Misho, an entrepreneur moonlighting as a taxi driver in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, to make ends meet. He appears morally upright, trapped in a hopeless situation and financially exploited by a banker operating on the opposite side of the moral spectrum. This leads Misho to a desperate act.

While the prologue takes place in broad daylight, the film's core unfolds in the evening and nighttime, where we meet several of Misho's colleagues, all of whom share his struggle to make ends meet. Their jobs as taxi drivers are therefore essential for survival. This is set against the backdrop of a brightly lit yet gray and depressing Sofia, where all scenes are largely filmed in long takes. In the background, the radio (in the various taxis) plays a significant role, extensively commenting on the events surrounding Misho earlier that day, and a cross-section of the Bulgarian population expressing their opinions on the country's (moral, political, and financial) state. Thus, Stephan Komandarev depicts a Bulgaria teetering on the brink of a (moral) abyss. A country seeing its inhabitants flee in droves, seeking better conditions in other EU countries. A tragic film, convincingly acted and exceptionally well-directed.

A captivating, cleverly constructed mosaic of lives in contemporary Sofia, Bulgaria. Through the eyes of a group of taxi drivers, we follow the city's decline and the ever-deepening erosion of norms and values. The individual scenes are often shot in a single long take, with occasionally highly complex camerawork. This approach certainly creates a great atmosphere and a sense of connection with the characters. Not all the stories are equally interesting, but overall, this is a fascinating and thought-provoking film.
