A while ago, I saw Nomadland (2020), about the marginalized in the US—whether by choice or necessity, depending on how you interpret it. I was decidedly unimpressed, despite Frances McDormand's decent performance. This film is the complete, undeniable answer to that sense of dissatisfaction—this is the film Zhao should have made. It's the age-old tragedy of someone born for a dime who will never become a quarter, the fable of the mama bear who will defend her cubs to the end. Unfortunately, reality is unforgiving. In the US, happiness is reserved for the very rich; everyone else is merely extra.

The film's effectiveness is largely due to Poots, who once again delivers a truly beautiful performance – his timing, diction, and non-verbal delivery are incredibly strong. The rest of the story is a bit of a sideshow, though the little Oulton is also quite good. The big action scene feels a bit out of place in the story's flow; it could have been implied. On the other hand, the soundtrack is quite good; the s/h beep is memorable and feels incredibly fitting in its simple simplicity.

It's rather baffling that this film hasn't gained traction—you'd expect the red carpet to be rolled out everywhere and director De Fontenay to be completely lost as to which offers to accept. But no, apparently not.
