Vele Hemels boven de Zevende plot

Eva is always ready to save the world. She is a rock in the surf for her adolescent niece, her quarreling parents and her love-struck sister. She is a champion of giving, except to herself. Because behind her broad smile and overdose of understanding, a nagging loneliness grows. In “Many Heavens”, five characters fight more with themselves than with each other, in this existence that is ridiculously beautiful and terribly difficult, all at the same time.

Depressing film about a family in which each member struggles with relationships, both within and outside the family, but especially with themselves. Despite a small bright spot at the end, this is an extremely gloomy film, but one in which the screenplay by Greet op de Beeck - who adapted her book of the same name - does create a number of very strong characters. Vivian de Muynck is the least effective as the egocentric, rather caricatural grandmother, but Brit van Hoof is phenomenal as the youngest daughter Eva, who continues to hide her pain, sorrow and insecurities 'for the sake of peace' behind a radiant smile. The film takes a bit too long to reach the inevitable final confrontation, but thanks in part to a surprising twist, it is advisable to keep your handkerchiefs at hand. Stylishly directed by Jan Matthys and with often dazzling camerawork by Stijn van der Veken, this is a family drama that compensates for its limited shortcomings with visual beauty.

At first I was disappointed with this film. I didn't really get into it, it felt rather artificial and forced and I didn't feel it. Later on this changed and it was the complete opposite. I was touched, I was completely into it, I thought the acting was sincere and there are beautiful, special images in this film. It is a depressing film with themes that are recognizable and empathetic to me. I am now curious about the book. Because the beginning was difficult for me, I deduct 1 star from the highest possible. After that, this film made up for a lot. 4*

Never read Op de Beeck's books, but I think it's a bit heavy-handed. Nevertheless, I thought the film version of Kom Hier Dat Ik IU Kus was quite decent, but this one is a lot less successful. The different perspectives don't work quite right and the fact that they're all rather annoying doesn't really help either.
