The Kid from the Big Apple plot
Eleven-year-old Sarah from New York has to temporarily live with her grandfather in Malaysia when her mother has to go to China for work. She refuses to conform to her grandfather's habits, such as eating chicken for breakfast, and finds the neighborhood and its residents disgusting. She refuses to communicate with her grandfather, who only speaks Chinese. He seeks the help of neighbor Ah Bao, who claims to speak good English, but who can hardly do so.
