When Black Birds Fly plot

"The newest animated film from the creators of Where the Dead Go to Die"

Heaven is a beautiful clean paradise. People are free to do as they please. However, there is a rule: one is not allowed to communicate with the 'Evil One'. He lives behind the wall that surrounds the city, which is guarded for 24 hours by soldiers wearing gas masks. Marius, a small child, becomes obsessed with a large group of black birds and decides to follow them. Then he finds a talking cat with a broken leg who asks Marius and his friend Eden to help her by crawling through a hole in the wall. To thank the children, she gives them a brightly colored fruit. After Marius and Eden eat the fruit, they are introduced to the 'Evil One'.

This is something, yes.

In terms of impact, it reminded me somewhat of films like Eraserhead or Tetsuo. Different, and in love, or weirdness and ugliness, but all in a very impressive way. That doesn't mean fans of the aforementioned film will immediately love this, but there will be some overlap.

An audiovisual assault on the senses, full of strange scenes and rather unusual lore. But despite the fact that it doesn't look very polished, it's clearly very consciously and thoughtfully made. It's hard to recommend, but watch the trailer and you'll probably know right away whether you should see it or not. It's certainly unique.

4.5* and an extensive review
