Like Me plot

After posting a video of herself robbing a supermarket, Kiya gained a lot of followers on social media. Like a reckless loner, however, she seeks some form of real human contact. On her journey, she encounters various individuals such as a hobo and a troll, who are all swept up in her spiral of chaos, junk food and drugs. In a world of made-up personalities, Kiya sets out to reveal something true about humanity, but in the end she must confront herself.

Damn right . Wonderfully twisted film that more than once ends in a hallucinatory, bizarre neon nightmare. Visually perhaps the best I've seen this year. Really pure drool. Every shot splashes off the screen and the moments when the editing goes crazy are completely enjoyable. Best of all is how Mockler easily distinguishes himself with his own style from the cartload of other films with neon cinematography (Spring Breakers, Neon Demon etc).

The plot sounds a bit dull on paper and a bit typically indie-like, but that doesn't reverberate in the execution. The somewhat freewheeling character fits perfectly with the audiovisual style, the more absurd moments are enjoyable and not to forget there is Timlin who portrays a great character. Didn't know her yet but I'm sold on this one.

The best comparison I can make is as if David Lynch and Refn saw the movie Nerve together and thought: we can do this (much) better. Incredible debut. Thick 4.5*.

Bit of a tough movie.

There is plenty to praise here. The approach is fairly radical, the stylization is loud and leading, the film is not easy to see into its cards and continues to surprise until the end. Mockler is definitely a director to keep an eye on and certainly delivers with this film.

At the same time, it all feels a bit unfinished and a bit too good. Such a soundtrack that lacks some power, the decoration that is often just a bit too bare, the editing that really could have been a bit more solid and compositions that could have been a bit tighter. It's probably there, maybe with a slightly bigger budget too, but Mockler doesn't 100% succeed in camouflaging his lack of budget with raw talent.

The story also gets in the way at times. Some uninteresting characters and an anti-YouTube moral that doesn't interest much and also gets a little too much attention throughout the film. Acting is also on the edge, although that is slightly less disturbing in a film like this.

Enough beauty to see, but also some shortcomings. I see a lot of people talking about a "trip", but it's really a bit too neat and within the lines for that. But otherwise a lot of potential and a fascinating film experience.

3.5*

Hyper stylized neon punk. Mockler 'distinguishes' (to what extent we still speak of that when this is becoming more or less the indie norm from semi-experimental cinema) not only visually, but is also an interesting director conceptually. Of course, the scenes in which he shifts up a gear, pumps a distorted bucket of sound underneath and goes completely wild in the editing are the real eye-catchers, but in between he also knows how to stick it together beautifully, often somewhat melancholy surreal. With a soundtrack that smoothly changes in style and intensity, with the editing moving completely in sync. Great craftsmanship in a more than promising debut.
