Unhappy satirical songwriter Henry Philips is lured to LA by noted TV producer Jay Warren. Jay wants to make a show about the life of a struggling actor. Jay discovers Henry at a local bar and is convinced his story needs to be told. With the support of his longtime musician Jillian and his well-meaning manager Ellen Pinsky, Henry weathers the ups and downs of life in LA, even making the Hollywood dream come true. But when a major TV network gets involved, he has to make the choice to go through life as a prankster himself or become the target of ridicule.
