Very good.

I don't think typical action films get much better than this. It's not my favorite genre, but when done well, it can be quite entertaining. Lam is a proven talent in the genre. He rarely makes truly great films, but he's talented enough to craft a superb action piece.

Jungles, drugs, a deranged bad guy, lots of firearms, chases (car and boat), and everything you could want. All the clichés are there. Lam doesn't try too hard to weave a long story behind it all, which is a good thing, I'd say. This film aims for action and suspense, and it succeeds with flying colors.

Visually stunning (though there are a few moments where it suddenly feels a bit fake), with some very cool and explosive moments. Zhang Hanyu and Eddie Peng make a strong central duo, and the locations are used optimally. The last half hour is one big action spectacle, though there are also a few scenes midway through that focus more on tension, with some undercover work.

No idea why this one scores so low here, if you're looking for some classic action you could hardly hope for a better film.

3.5*

Ugh, way too much nonsense, unadulterated Chinese sentimentality, and then it takes a while to tell all the characters apart. Lam needs about 45 minutes to explain a super-simple story. I was long gone by then. The fact that there are some decent, but lackluster, action scenes doesn't add much to the enjoyment. I was hoping for two hours of action; it's a shame there's so much whining in the film. I am a fan of police dog Bingo, and I mean that only half-sarcastically.

A complete mess. The direction is hyper-nervous; the screen jumps around almost every three seconds (and for two hours!), which made it a tiring watch. I don't know if Lam's films, Operation Mekong and Operation Red Sea, were intended as a diptych, but it seems that the efficiency and military might of the Chinese are meant to be praised in both. I found Red Sea (3*) the better of the two and technically less sloppy. Operation Mekong is a Rambo-esque film in which the army and police join forces to capture the drug lord of the Golden Triangle. Based on a true story (Mekong River massacre). It wouldn't have been quite as explosive and epic in real life. There are some cool scenes, like the one in the mall, but not enough to be good.
