Que Dios Nos Perdone plot
In the sweltering summer of 2011 in Madrid, two detectives work on a case involving a violent serial killer targeting older women. In the same period, in the heat of the Spanish metropolis, massive street protests are organized against the economic malaise and one and a half million believers are waiting for Pope Benedict XVI. It gives the security services the necessary headaches. The closed workaholic Velarde (Antonio de la Torre) and the explosive Alfaro (Roberto Alamo) – both not free from personal problems – are therefore expected to solve this as quickly and as quietly as possible. Slowly, the psychological profile of both the perpetrator and the detectives unravels, all of whom are out of control to a certain extent.

An exceptionally good thriller and also a character study, which occasionally evokes the atmosphere of 'Se7en', but ultimately goes off the rails in the final act and therefore cannot seriously compete with the classics in the genre, such as the aforementioned se7en. The story is set against the sultry backdrop of Madrid in the summer of 2011 when the Pope visits the city and there are various protests, partly as a result of the then prevailing economic crisis. The film particularly excels in terms of the atmosphere that is created as well as in the excellent performances of Antonio de la Torre and Roberto Álamo, each with their own concerns and opposite in character (a cliché that often occurs in this type of film, but which I take for granted). The film has a constantly threatening undertone and the tension is built up slowly but skillfully. Maurizio Filardo's score certainly plays a role in this, as my upstairs neighbor rightly mentioned.
Unfortunately, as mentioned, things go wrong at the end of the film for my taste: the denouement is a bit lazy and raises questions. But all in all, this should not spoil the fun, because in my opinion Que Dios Nos Perdone is certainly one of the better thrillers of recent years.

I already wrote it about his most recent film As Bestas (Film, 2022), a idiosyncratic, special director that Sorogoyen. The approach to this standard detective story is different than usual. Not that everything turns out perfectly, but I do like it when someone follows their own path.
Now take those two lead detectives. There is absolutely no buddy cop quality. One rather explosive by nature, the other an eccentric with a speech impediment. They fit together like tongs on a pig. I had the impression that the plot seemed a bit bizarre at times and that it didn't all make sense. OK, not exactly the most thoughtful story. But I did have it for Luis Velarde who was excellently portrayed by Antonio de la Torre.
Fortunately, there is more momentum in the second part and the serial rapist and murderer comes more to the fore. Nice twists with the death of Alfaro and the fact that the case was not solved in the end, although Sorogoyen seemed to indicate that, like in most such films, with that chain it would be easy. Not so, we suddenly have to wait three years before taking matters into our own hands. Nice!

This was quite doable, of course not the big winner, but I had fun with it so that's something. A small suggestion. I've been watching a lot of Spanish films in recent months, and in almost every film it rains heavily and heavily. But I regularly visit Spain and I think I had one day of rain and everywhere they are having problems with drought due to global warming... sorry we deviate...
