The Worthy is a post-apocalyptic thriller that doesn't exactly excel in originality, but offers enough action and grit to keep you entertained. Admittedly, there were two reasons I went to see this film: a recommendation from an acquaintance, but also, and especially, the Emirati production, which I was curious about. Now, there's little else in the film that indicates it originates from the United Arab Emirates; aside from the language, this isn't a fundamentally different kind of thriller than, say, Hollywood. As I mentioned before, the setting or story isn't particularly original, but the film is otherwise well-shot and acted, with a sufficient plot for an action/thriller like this, yet with a fairly hard, violent edge. You could do worse if you're looking for a straightforward thriller.

Arabic cinema, then.

I haven't touched it much yet, but I decided to put it on again on my way home from vacation. It's not great, but I can't call it bad either. It's clear that it had a director who was quite enthusiastic about the work.

The film features a few remarkably large-scale and spectacular action scenes. It's all a bit too pretentious, especially the slow-motion, which is overused, but there's no denying that it's all very energetic, and for that reason, it still gets a passing grade.

The acting is solid. They're trying to flesh out at least 80% of the roles, but it almost seems to happen on a waiting list basis. The focus is initially on one, and as soon as that one loses its appeal, turns out to be a villain, or disappears from the scene, the next one takes center stage. A bit too easily.

It's clear the budget wasn't huge, but it's all very enthusiastic and energetic. This results in some great moments. The CGI isn't particularly impressive, but it does offer plenty of detail. There are few moments that suffer as a result.

At times, it tends to drag on and become boring. The underlying tension never really gets going, making it all a bit pointless. Only when the finale gets a bit more action-packed does it become more enjoyable. There are certainly plenty of decent scenarios.

If the first part of the film had been a bit more paced, it would have been more enjoyable. Now you're watching a film that's enthusiastic and energetic, but still feels a bit too inexperienced and slow in the first half.

Well, yes, this "The Worthy" does resemble "The Walking Dead" a bit, but without the zombies, of course. Here too, however, it's primarily humans who pose the threat to humanity, with water scarcity being the biggest problem in a post-apocalyptic era.

Technically speaking, it's a reasonably well-made film, especially for UAE films, which aren't exactly the country par excellence for filmmaking. It does follow the usual paths of action and storyline. Entertaining, certainly, but certainly not anything special. Lots of bravado and muscle-flexing.
