This kick-off of the telefilms 2017 is not a high flyer. The child actors are too substandard to give the key moments in which they play any cachet. Topics such as 'bullying' and 'trauma processing' are presented in a somewhat preachy and schematic way. And yet the love triangle between Benja Bruijning, Sanne Langelaar and Mandela Wee Wee (yes, really!) moved me. Visually it has some nice touches at times, including the aerial shots from the perspective of the honey buzzard from the title.

Gripping drama that shows that being bullied in the past - or witnessing it - can leave lasting scars on someone's life. The symbolism, which I understood this time for a change, was very well done, as was the music.

Unfortunately, as Donkerwoud mentioned above, the child actors left too much to be desired. It bothered, negating the film's chemistry a bit. Shame.

Visually, there were indeed some beautiful images in it. The happy ending tune was not necessary, but the final scene with the second honey buzzard was nicely done.

7.5/10

Bookworm Simon [Benja Bruijning] and his heavily pregnant girlfriend Laura [Sanne Langelaar] struggle to keep their bookshop afloat. When an introverted man [Michel Sluysmans] visits the store, Simon seems to recognize him. Unnoticed, he follows the man, with dramatic consequences related to a childhood trauma. In flashbacks we follow the friendship between primary school student Simon [Svenno van Kleij] and his best friend Ralph [Samuel Bouma], who is frequently intimidated, bullied and beaten up by classmates Vincent [Shaquille Fernard] and Ronnie [Nino den Brave]. A fascinating and intelligent basic story that loses some of its expressiveness due to a somewhat rattling and on important points little credible scenario. Fortunately, the youthful cast does a great job and Langelaar and Mandela Wee Wee (as the adult Vincent) make this a Telefilm that you will not soon forget, despite its shortcomings.
