A beautiful, arty take on the slasher genre. The soundtrack, in particular, is fantastic, sometimes feeling-good and dreamy, and at other times aggressive in an almost Irréversible-esque way. It creates a very unique contrast. The first section in the woods is wonderfully mysterious and atmospheric; the slasher section isn't bad at all, but it does sometimes feel a bit too conventional, and I also found the killer's complete lack of motivation a bit weak. The final scene, however, is strong and has the same dreamy tone as the film's beginning.

Maybe it's a bit of a grower, but for now, I'm sticking with a generous 3.5*. It also reminded me a bit of The Eyes of My Mother at times, though that's probably also due to the Portuguese connection.

Definitely a pleasant surprise, but with a caveat.

Normally I'm not a fan of black and white films, simply because they're rarely used.

That fear had largely vanished after 10 minutes. The first scene, in particular, and the animated film accompanying the opening credits are fantastic. After that, the visuals diminish somewhat, but thanks in part to the film's mysterious nature, it's still definitely worth it.

But once we focus on mother and daughter, things really take a turn for the worse. The scenes in the house feel dull, and the plot doesn't really move forward. Fortunately, this doesn't last too long, and the ending is much better. Elusive.

Could have been better, but certainly sufficient as a (short) snack.

Small 3.5*

Great movie.

A mix of arthouse and genre films, the low budget just barely masked. You can still tell it wasn't overpriced, but the cinematography is stylish and the score more than delivers. However, there are moments where it's just not quite right.

Structurally, it's an interesting film, with a calmer beginning, a darker second half, and a rather bitter finale. Thankfully, the running time isn't too long, and after a while, I was really into the film. A nice mix of styles, though the film may never truly appeal to a wide audience because of this.

4.0* and an extensive review
