Nice video.

No idea what it is these days. Maybe because horror is a bit too broad, but enthusiasts try to watch as much as possible? Is it that those Netflix films are promoted too strongly, so that they too often reach the wrong audience? Or do people not know what they are getting into?

Of course, this Malevolent is not very original. It is a haunted house film that plays on atmosphere, with a macabre story and a nice setting. If you expect James Wan scenes, you are of course in the wrong place. Gore hounds won't find anything here and there aren't really any jump scares either. But none of these are requirements for a good horror film.

The acting is above average, the atmosphere is carefully constructed and the presentation is also more than solid. The film lacks any real revivals, but there is not much bad to say about it. Nice Halloween filler then, assuming you know what you're getting into and don't expect anything that the film doesn't expect anyway.

Mediocre.

Assuming I'm far from the biggest horror fan, this is still okay. Fortunately, one does not get bogged down in towering clichés such as jump scares under a deafening volume knob. Not that all clichés are avoided; those children for example, I don't really think they're a great choice.

But all in all easily digestible. The film isn't really long, so it remains quite compact. People often rely on atmosphere, and they know how to create it in a dignified way. The final denouement is quite tame and unfortunately not surprising. The cast performs mostly solid, with the exception of Florence Pugh, who does better than 'solid'.

Nice role by Florence Pugh, who plays a traumatized woman who has not come to terms with the death of her mother. She makes her money from other people's traumas. More specifically, she makes her money by defrauding people with the same trauma as herself. She does this by summoning deceased loved ones and exorcising evil spirits with a group of people.

Another fun role is played by veteran Celia Imrie, who hires the club to exorcise ghosts in her house. She plays an older lady who is not so easy to fool. A quick-witted skeptic. The way she portrays her character is very amusing.

The reference to these two characters highlights the major positive points of the film. The rest is standard fare. The best moments are when Pugh sneaks through the halls of the house in the darkness looking for ghosts. Attractively done. The interior of the house with its many rooms, stairs and hidden corners is put to good use. All this is embellished with an occasional jump scare, which is not always surprising.

Thanks to Imrie, the finale becomes a hectic affair with lots of bloody action. Perhaps a bit much and perhaps a bit exaggerated, but the ending is one that will linger in the memory. And so Malovent is an average film that occasionally peaks pleasantly.
