Lady in White plot

"The year is 1962. The place is Willowpoint Falls. Nobody talks about what happened in the school cloakroom 10 years ago. Now, in the dead of night, Frankie Scarlatti is going to find out why."

Locked in a closet at school during Halloween 1962, little Frankie Scarlatti sees the ghost of a young girl who was murdered there years ago. Shortly afterwards, he finds himself being stalked by the killer and ends up in an old house where an old woman, always dressed in white, lives. When he discovers the old woman's secret, he realizes that the girl's killer is someone close to him.

That this film is difficult to categorize is one of the merits of this successful combination of nostalgia, comedy, mystery, and horror. In this beautifully crafted film, Lukas Haas plays 10-year-old Frankie Scarlotti, who, in 1963, must cope not only with the death of his mother but also with another traumatic experience that may be connected to the murder of a girl who regularly appears in his dreams (or are they ghosts?).

Frank LaLoggia wrote the screenplay and music, produced, directed, and played the role of the adult Frankie—the film is essentially one big flashback—in a clear "labor of love." With the help of cinematographer Russell Carpenter, LaLoggia manages to influence the viewer's emotions during scenes. The dream sequences/ghost scenes are the most impressive, not despite, but precisely because—by today's standards—they are not technically perfect. Most importantly, despite stylistic shifts, he managed to create a cohesive film, aided in particular by a powerful performance by the then 11-year-old Haas. Not all performances are equally strong, especially not those of the other children, but that's certainly no reason to pass this film up.

A good film in which a young boy is locked in the school hallway by two other boys. A beautiful, imaginative story whose outcome, especially during the first half, is unpredictable. Atmospheric, both nostalgic and suspenseful. Beautiful cinematography, and the young Lukas Haas does a great job. I wonder why director Frank LaLoggia hasn't made any more films after this one.

Director Frank LaLoggia goes about his ambitiously imaginative mystery film, tapping into a variety of genres, but he bites off a bit too much, especially in the second half. Lady in White is most stable during the first 45 minutes, where an enthusiastic Lukas Haas benefits from a rich plot and a pleasant atmosphere. After that, we jump further in time, and LaLoggia increasingly tries to utilize the computer effects, but unfortunately, they come across as rather dated and mediocre. The plot also becomes somewhat dense, and the drawn-out running time begins to lose its power, ultimately culminating in a sensational finale. The acting is generally good, and the filmmakers genuinely try to tell a story, but the final result is still inconsistent.
