Singin' in the Rain plot

"What a Glorious Feeling!"

Hollywood, 1927. An enthusiastic crowd gathers around the renowned Chinese Theater to cheer on its idols Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), where the two attend the premiere of their silent film The Royal Rascal. Sometime later, when the sound film makes its appearance, it turns out that the handsome, rather dim-witted and conceited diva of the silent film, Lamont, has a scary and obnoxious voice. Don's best friend Cosmo comes up with the idea of having another woman read in and sing the lyrics, while Linda just has to mime. That other voice belongs to the charming revue singer Kathy Shelden (Debbie Reynolds), with whom Don quickly falls in love.

Well, it was inevitable. After watching the widely acclaimed La La Land for the second time yesterday, a revision of this Hollywood classic was inevitable. While La La Land was completely worn by Emma Stone, for Singin' in the Rain that credit goes entirely to Gene Kelly. The title track performed by Kelly in the rain is timeless. The best musical number ever made. No song in La La Land can compete with that. I think the producer of La La Land must have clearly looked at this classic from 1952. La La Land also ended with a surreal dance scene, excellently performed by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling that can but really can't match the surreal dance scene. Broadway Melody that we got to see towards the end of this fantastic musical. The songs of this musical by the duo Kelly/Donen are by the way better than those of La La Land. I already mentioned Singin' in the Rain, but how about that slapstick song Make 'm Laugh by Donald O' Connor? Amazing, right. Lina Lamont was of course terrible to hear but of course it fits completely into the story.

In the end, the question remains for me about what is the best musical? La La Land or this Singin' in the Rain. I'm going for the latter anyway, although both films have received the highest rating from me.

Rating: 5.0* after revision.

Is there a more retarded form of entertainment than tap dance? I suspect not, and personally I would rather watch a live performance by Yoko Ono than Gene Kelly stomping the floors with his stupid toothpaste smile. This is escapism squared. Everything about this film is fake and that is in no way hidden or watered down, quite the contrary. Just like in Pre-Code Busby Berkeley productions, the emphasis is on creating a fantasy world that should divert attention from the gray reality. The Technicolor catapults the shine and glory to level eleven with its signature bright red and yellow colors. While I'd usually rather jump off a bridge than watch a musical, the craftsmanship and set design here commands respect every now and then. Some dance numbers lean more towards what Woody from Toy Story describes as 'falling with style', but it really catches the eye at times. The throwback to 1927 is also amusing. The gags with the microphone on the set were just funny and the transition from silent to talkie is mocked in a playful way. The cast does not leave a lasting impression. Gene Kelly is a charismatic figure, but he messes it up by moving his tongue or feet every two minutes. Put him up to his shoulders in a bucket of cement with a wad in his mouth and I'm willing to reevaluate him.
