Léon Morin, Prêtre plot

Barny is a young, sexually frustrated widow who lives with her daughter in a small French town during the occupation. As a communist militant she has absolutely nothing to do with religion. Yet one day she walks into a church and meets the intelligent and good-looking priest Léon Morin (Belmondo). After that they regularly meet with each other and feelings arise in her that celibacy does not allow.

Just like Le Silence de la Mer (1949) quite an outsider within the oeuvre of Jean-Pierre Melville. Again, little action and many dialogues with a considerable philosophical content between a priest and an atheist. In terms of content, it did little for me. It is daring to cast Jean-Paul Belmondo in the role of an understanding, gentle priest.

Strange film indeed. A sort of Ingmar Bergman theme but directed by noir icon Melville.

Because of the editing and pacing during the Catholic dialogues, you always get the idea that a corpse is going to turn up somewhere. That can't be the intention.

Belmondo and especially Riva are otherwise excellent.

Film adaptation of a book that involves a lot of dialogue, which in essence is all about that. In essence, it is certainly interesting to observe the tension between Belmondo (as a priest!) and Riva. With Belmondo, I had to flip a switch because I mainly know him as the bon vivant from other films. Melville has again chosen to make a film that is set during the occupation years of the Second World War. That background gives direction to certain events, although it is never in the foreground. In terms of subject matter - woman is in love with priest - it is typical of that time and you should also want to look at it with those eyes. For me, it takes a bit too long to tell this essentially simple story. It is certainly beautifully portrayed by Melville.
